The aftermath of flooding on the Wirral
The North West of England was hit by the worst rain experienced in September for 30 years with more than 300 homes affected by floods when twice the average rainfall for the whole of September fell in just two days.
On the Wirral, the rain flooded many roads including Birkenhead Road in Meols, where traffic had to be diverted because the flood water running from the fields onto the road making it too deep for traffic to drive through. Other roads which were affected by the heavy rain fall included Brinstage Lane, Brimstage Road, Arrowe Brook Lane, Saughall Massie Road, Thornton Common Road, Clatterbridge Road, Newton, Thornton Hough, Willaston Road and Parkgate Road in Chester were all closed as well as several A roads in West Wirral which were badly affected. The flood water was so bad on China Farm Lane in Frankby, fire fighters had to rescue a man trapped in his car when it broke down whilst driving through the deep flood water.
The rain didn’t just affect roads on the Wirral as flooding caused disruption to Merseyrail between Rock Ferry and Ellesmere Port due to the flooding in Hooton. Hamilton Square train station was closed on Monday due to a power fault.
But it wasn’t just transport that was affected by the continuous heavy rain over the last three days, a nursery in Brimstage had to be evacuated due to rising water levels and the Police had to ferry children to their parents waiting on dryer land. Fire Crews were called to a garden in Garden Hay Road in Saughall Massie where six inches of water had to be diverted out of the garden and into nearby drains.
Farmland and grazing fields in Meols next to the River Birket have been turned into lakes which are several feet deep due to the river bursting its banks in various places. The Environment Agency recorded a four year high for the River Birket at Davis Road in Moreton where levels reached 2.89m deep.
The Environment Agency had to issue a flood warning to residents living near the Riveracre Brook in Great Sutton and there were also flood alerts in Ellesmere Port, Wallasey, Heswall, Hoylake and Bebington because of the following rivers over flowing; Birket, Arrowerook, Fender and Dibbinsdale.
A total of 37 flood alerts and 17 flood warnings were enforced by the Environment Agency across the North West on Tuesday morning alone.
