Stamp out standby and save money - according to new study
A study by the Energy Savings Trust and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has discovered how much money you can save on your energy bills if you simply turn off your household appliances rather than leaving them on standby. The study involved 251 households which had their habits observed from 2010 to 2011, with 26 examined for the whole year and the rest for a period of a month.
The report listed the appliances that waste the most electricity when left on standby which included satellite boxes, televisions and other video and audio equipment. The report also confirmed that more appliances are being left on such as computers, mobile phones, dishwashers and washing machines.
Leaving appliances on standby can account for 9% to 16% of your average electricity bill of £530 a year. However, turning off the appliances you usually leave on standby can save you an average of £86 pounds a year, according to the study.
The study also revealed how people are using their domestic appliances such as tumble dryers and dish washers unnecessarily. The report revealed that on average, people were spending at least £80 of their yearly electricity bill on laundry with an average of 5.5 washes per week, that’s almost one every day! The report also exposed how many people turn on a tumble dryer rather than hanging their laundry on a clothes horse or a washing line, which is a free alternative.
The households that have dishwashers used considerably more energy than those without, spending double the amount of time washing their cups and sorcerers than their clothes.
This study was the first of its kind in the UK and the Government is hoping the results will help people understand how much energy they use and how they can reduce their usage and save money with a simple flick of a switch.
Will you consider turning your appliance off rather than leaving them on standby to shave several pounds off your energy bills and reduce the amount of unnecessary carbon emissions you produce?(0) Comments
